Frequently asked questions

What does ManaWG cost?

Nothing. ManaWG is free, with no ads and no paid tier. A flat holds up to 20 active members.

Do I need an app store?

No. ManaWG is a web app and runs in the browser at app.manawg.com. On your phone you can add the app to the home screen. You switch push notifications on or off for each area.

How do my flatmates join the flat?

One person creates the flat and shares the invite link. The others sign in with Google or email and join through the link.

How are expenses split?

For each expense you choose who took part and split equally or with custom amounts per person, exact to the cent. Shared expenses shows each person’s balance and suggests settlements with few transfers. The money moves outside the app, and you then mark the amount as paid.

How does the cleaning rota work?

In the cleaning rota every task has a rhythm in days or months. When one is done, ManaWG picks the person with the lowest workload; assigned and overdue tasks are counted. Anyone who is away is skipped. There are no points or rewards.

What happens when someone is away?

Members enter a period of time away, for example for a holiday. Anyone who is away is skipped at the next assignment in the cleaning rota.

Can I take data from Splitwise or Splid with me?

If your data exists as a CSV file, through the CSV import with a preview. In the import you can also read in a photo or screenshot of an expense list with text recognition and correct it before saving; a photo of a single receipt is only attached, not analysed.

What is there besides money and cleaning?

A shared shopping list with supplies, fixed costs, a calendar you can also subscribe to, a noticeboard and a chat.

How do I sign in?

With Google or with email and password. You join through an invite link or an email invitation from a flatmate.

Does ManaWG work with other currencies?

No. ManaWG works in euros only, with no exchange rates. If you split costs in several currencies on trips, an app with currency conversion suits you better. What matters when choosing an app is covered on Best flat-share app.

Does ManaWG transfer money automatically?

No. ManaWG calculates suggestions, you transfer the money yourselves outside the app and mark amounts as paid. There is no bank connection.

Where is my data stored?

The database is hosted with Supabase in Frankfurt am Main (EU). Resend (USA) is used to send email. Which data goes to whom is set out in the privacy policy.

Is ManaWG open source?

Yes. ManaWG is licensed under the Apache License 2.0, and the source code is on GitHub at github.com/Abuarchiv/manawg. This website has its own repository, Abuarchiv/manawg-landing. More is on Open-source flat-share app.

Can I host ManaWG myself?

Yes, with Docker Compose: the repository includes a setup that runs the app, PostgreSQL, sign-in and image storage on one machine, described in docs/self-hosting.md on GitHub. Most flats do not need it, because app.manawg.com is free, but if you want the data on a machine you control, the steps and limits are on Open-source flat-share app.

Does ManaWG work without internet?

In part. If the network drops, ManaWG saves new entries on your device and sends them once you are back online: shopping entries, time away, new and completed cleaning tasks, expenses and fixed costs. After about seven days, actions that were left behind are no longer sent automatically but shown to you for review.

Can I export our flat’s data?

Yes. Any member downloads the flat’s data from Settings under Data, everything as JSON or single areas as CSV, such as expenses, fixed costs, shopping or cleaning rota. The monthly statement can be printed or saved as a PDF.

How do I remind flatmates to pay?

On the Reminders page there is a Remind button. A reminder about the same debt between the same two people can go out at most once every 48 hours.

How do I install ManaWG on an iPhone?

Open app.manawg.com in Safari, tap ≡, then Share, then Show More, choose “Add to Home Screen” and tap Add. Then open ManaWG from the home screen and sign in once.
